Dramatic Ed Extended Day Students Pack Weekend Food for Classmates at Sally Ride Elementary
On January 22, 2025, students from the Dramatic Ed Extended Day Program at Sally Ride Elementary took part in a meaningful volunteer effort, working together to provide weekend food for their classmates through the Blessings in a Backpack program. A group of dedicated fourth and fifth graders came together with enthusiasm and a shared commitment to ensuring that no student in their school went without food over the weekend.
One student took on a leadership role, managing logistics with a clipboard in hand, ensuring that the correct number of food bags were packed and labeled according to each teacher’s class list. She coordinated details such as grade level and the number of students per class, helping the team efficiently organize and prepare the food for distribution. Once packed, the bags were neatly placed on the stage, awaiting pickup the following day, when teachers would distribute them to students in need.
Beyond providing essential nutrition, this hands-on experience offered valuable real-world lessons in collaboration, communication, math, reading, and problem-solving. Students showcased teamwork, organizational skills, and a deep sense of empathy as they worked to support their peers.
The Blessings in a Backpack program continues to make a lasting impact at Sally Ride Elementary, fostering a spirit of generosity and cooperation among students. Through initiatives like this, young learners are empowered to make a difference in their communities while developing essential life skills that will serve them well into the future.
